Reinstatement of the earthquake-damaged Anglican cathedral in Cathedral Square, stopped mid-build and now seeking a way to finish. Construction was paused in August 2024 with no funding pathway, and mothballing was costed at about $1m a year plus a one-off $5m. In September 2025 Christ Church Cathedral Reinstatement Ltd unveiled Re:Opening, a staged plan to open half the building including the nave and restore the tower, with parts reopened by 2030. Completion depends on money the government has ruled out. The Crown put in $25m, including a $15m suspensory loan, then said in 2024 there would be no more taxpayer funding, and construction stopped. NZ First campaigned in March 2026 on funding the rebuild, so whether the shortfall is ever closed turns on the election in a way that is unusually direct for this register.
